NAME Katerina Hunter-Bell
NICKNAMES Kat
AGE 18
GENDER Female
HOMETOWN Wetherseed Town
APPEARANCE
Katerina is the sort of person that many would find attractive if only her face weren’t covered in dirt half the time. She stands a bit taller than average, standing at 5’6 and weighing in at about 125 pounds with a slim build. Her hair is long, dark and wavy with the tendency to get itself snagged on branches if she doesn’t put it up in some way. Her skin is fair, but not pale enough to be considered sickly, and she’s one of the lucky ones who tans rather than burns. Her eyes are a bright, piercing blue.
Regrettably, for someone so attractive, her wardrobe is composed entirely of relatively plain, yet practical garments in a variety of earth tones (possibly all made of hemp) and with plenty of pockets for keeping whatever "wilderness survival essentials" she needs at the time. When harvesting plants, she always wears gloves, both to keep the plant as "uncontaminated" by her hands as possible, but also to protect her hands from being damaged by thorns.
Besides her gloves, the only accessory she wears is a moonstone pendant her parents gave her when she reached puberty. In fact, she hardly ever takes it off except to bathe. Sometimes she goes without footwear of any kind, but more often than not will wear open-toed sandals. She never wears makeup and she doesn’t like tight clothes at all. She feels that they’re too restrictive and don’t give her skin room to “breathe”, but unlike much of the population of Wetherseed Town, she isn’t a nudist, although she is more comfortable around nudity than most.
PERSONALITY
If there’s one thing that can be said about Kat, it’s that she’s curious about everything. She will turn over a rock just to see what’s under it. She will forge ahead into the unknown, utterly fearless. She’s also not afraid to get her hands (or any other part of her) dirty. To her, there’s no such thing as “roughing it”, it’s really not that hard to survive on your own if you have the right skills and know-how. Fortunately, she has plenty of both. She can hunt and fish for her supper, can fruits and vegetables and salt meat to preserve them. In a pinch, she can fashion a sling for a broken arm (at least until she can get to a clinic or hospital) and perform basic first aid. She can make fire using nothing but two sticks and kindling, and can basically survive with only the clothes on her back provided the weather is fair and there’s a source of food and water nearby, not that she would prefer to do that on a regular basis, but she can if forced to do so.
She’s definitely not the type to cower in fear before wild pokemon--or other people--especially when someone she cares about is in danger. It’s far more likely that she’ll charge in and start throwing rocks—or whatever other improvised weapon she can find on hand. This doesn’t mean that she can’t tell when she’s outmatched, in which case fleeing is her preferred option. She will also happily drag friends away from a dangerous situation, literally if necessary.
She believes that humans and pokemon should live in harmony, working and playing together. She detests those who see pokemon as mere tools, or worse, those who abuse them or otherwise use them for reasons that she feels are selfish.
Despite the fact that her wilderness survival skills are matched by few in her age group; she can’t say the same for her social skills. Large crowds make her nervous and prone to fidgeting. Compared to more outgoing personalities, she might seem a bit shy and awkward at first, only showing her true colours around someone she trusts. Having lived a life that is as “low-tech” as possible, she sometimes finds it difficult to make much use of technology, usually reverting to the more tried and true—if more time-consuming—method of doing things.
She’s also afraid of the dark. Being in pitch black darkness for more than a few minutes causes her to forget all that she’s learned and panic until a source of light is found: a torch, a flashlight, the source doesn’t matter, as long as it illuminates the darkness. She also experiences nightmares on a regular basis.
HISTORY
Kat’s parents both grew up in Featherwing City, but moved to Wetherseed Town in search of a more “rustic” life that was free of “corporate influence”. Her father made a living as a hunter, fisherman, and guide to the local flora and fauna. Her mother supplemented their income through selling various handicrafts. The couple lived a simple life with as little technology as possible.
Growing up, Katerina spent long hours learning her parents’ skills. From her mother she learned the fine art of preserving foods so they wouldn’t quickly rot on the trail. She learned which local plants were used to soothe burns or relieve illness, and which were harmful to both people and pokemon. From her father, she learned how to hunt and fish and track animals in the surrounding woods.
Unfortunately for her, her father had a rather unorthodox teaching method.
It happened when she was ten years old. Her father had taken her into the woods for what she assumed was another routine lesson meant to hone her skills…
Instead, he left her in the woods, overnight.
She was very fortunate in that she was relatively unharmed in body when he came to fetch her the next morning, but her mind was a different story. She began to have nightmares in which she would wake up screaming that she was being eaten by ferocious wild pokemon. She refused to sleep without a light near her bedroom door, and would often stay awake regardless of its presence, jumping at every little sound. Her mother was none too pleased when she heard about it, refusing to speak to her father for days, and ending her silence with a screaming fit which lasted for hours.
After that, her mother became extremely protective of her, scarcely letting her out of her sight for more than a few minutes. If one good thing did come of that incident, her father never pulled a stunt like that again. As the years went by, however; Kat and her father grew more and more apart. As much as she loved her father, she realized that even he was capable of betraying her trust, and that betrayal hurt.
Now, at eighteen, she has decided to leave her hometown in order to see the world beyond it and find her calling in life, whether that is as a simple wilderness guide or something else.

ROLEPLAY SAMPLE
It was a bright sunny day when she left Wetherseed Town and the surrounding area for the first time. She had checked and rechecked her bags three times. Tarp? Check. Trail mix? Check. Solar-powered flashlight that operated via crank? Check. Fishing pole and lures? Strapped to her back. First aid kit? Check. Personal care items (including toiletries)? Check. Compass? Check. Cash? Er, no, but she would jump that hurdle when she came to it.
"I'm doing it," she said to herself. "I'm finally leaving Wetherseed Town..." That means I'll need a pokemon. A pokemon! They were all over town, of course, but she'd never had one of her own, and the thought sent a thrill of excitement through her body.
My own pokemon!
She knew it was childish, a grown woman filled with glee over creatures that she had been exposed to all her life, but this one would be different.
This one would be hers.
"I should bring a brush in for it!" She said excitedly, rushing back into the house and snatching one from her dresser. Even if her companion wasn't furry, it was always nice to have a spare brush, especially with the way her hair behaved.
Her mother and father were waiting for her at the edge of the town's boundaries. Her mother's hug seemed a little too tight, her father clapped a hand on her shoulder, saying only: "Remember what I taught you, my dear."
"I will," she promised, turning her attention to the Penniacre Orchard. Beyond it lay Featherwing City, and beyond Featherwing City, who knew what she would find?
"And whatever you do, don't come back a slave to the corporations," her mother said, absolutely serious.
"No mother, I promise I'll stay as unincorporated as possible," she said, turning to smile at them both. "Well, I guess I'm off! Wish me luck!"
"Good luck!" They said in unison as she started down the path that would take her to Featherwing.
"--And don't get eaten by wild pokemon!" her mother added.
"No mother!" She called back, sighing a little. Her mother said things like that a lot, and she could never tell if she was being serious or just exaggerating for dramatic effect.
There will be plenty of time to think on that later, she reminded herself as she continued down the path, for now, she would commence what would possibly be the greatest adventure of her life.
