Issy was born with a shock of dark hair, almost black, curly and fluffy like a duckling’s feathers. As she grew her hair lightened in the sun and softened into loose ringlets, by the age of five it was long, mousy brown and straight. She normally wears her hair loose, her bangs held back by cute clips and slides. She, like her sister, has a side fringe that partially covers one eye although Isabella wears her fringe over her right eye and Fran wears her fringe over her left. Issy also likes curling it when they’re going out somewhere special and styling it for dates. Currently, her hair is long enough to brush against the small of her back, it’s grown so long because she has never had it cut more than a trim in her entire life.
Her long dark hair makes her skin look even paler, an impressive feat considering how light it already is. As a child she was allowed in the sun for long periods to ‘get some colour in her cheeks,’ but it never worked. As an adult she normally wears short skirts and short sleeve tops to catch the sun but her complexion remained stubbornly creamy.
Isabella has always been very tall, one of the tallest in the class, apart from her sister, of course. She’s about 5ft 7 and has the right build for modelling with her slender shape and curves. She likes to show off her body as well, dressing far less modestly than her twin sister. Issy’s favourite clothes are mini-skirts and shorts as well as figure-hugging dresses. Normally she wears bright colours and likes to stand out from the crowd. Isabella and Francesca don’t like to dress alike, if Fran was made to wear Issy’s clothes she would be incredibly embarrassed and if Iz was to wear Fran’s clothes she would feel constrained.
For Isabella, looks are very important and she spends a lot of time styling her hair, choosing outfits and making herself look nice before she heads out, even if it's just to the shops. She can't stand the idea of looking a mess and being thought badly of so there's never a hair out of place.
PERSONALITY
Issy is very outgoing and loud, she prides herself on being as fun to be around as possible. As a result she has always been surrounded by a large group of friends throughout her school life and after graduation. Her friends are something of a crutch for her emotionally. She can’t bear to feel disliked or unpopular and has always gone for a large quantity of friends over a few close ones.
She has few other interests that don’t revolve around her friends but she does also play the guitar, something she’s been learning since the age of 8. As well as that Isabella is also quite creative and draws in her sketchbook which is always hidden in her bedroom. It’s very personal and no one apart from Fran has ever seen it. Her sketchbook is something like a journal, she draws in it most days and it reflects her moods and the day’s events. For example, each time she began dating a new boy she would draw portraits in her sketchbook. Each time she lost a boy or a friend she would draw either her upset or the friend/boy as being ugly or angry. As Issy can often be a hard person to understand, her sketches provide a window into her mind.
Even with all her ups and downs throughout school Isabella has never been disliked by many people. However, her active social life had a negative effect on her grades at school, she was always outperformed by her sister. As Fran was getting more praise than Issy for her school grades Isabella assumed that they preferred Fran to her. This led to her jealous streak which often leads to conflict between the twins.
In most things Issy is very hard on herself and has high expectations, she always has to have the best of everything, the most friends, the best clothes and to be well-liked by everyone. She takes criticism and loss very badly and is incredibly competitive, winning is very important to her. When Issy loses she takes it as a personal failing and gets very upset, angry and defensive. This trait worries her parents and they have always been quick to reassure her, but her mother fears that any loss in pokemon battles will bring out her angry bad-loser side.
HISTORY
Isabella Jane Michaels was born on the 4th of March, four minutes after her sister Francesca Anne Michaels, in the sleepy suburbs surrounding Featherwing City. Her parents are Christina Andrews and Justin Michaels; at the time, her mother was only 16 and her dad was 19. Despite her father having a very good job and her mother making the decision to have the children their parents didn’t approve so the couple were cut off from their family. This made the hard job of raising twins even more difficult as her mother had to stay at home to care for them alone whilst her father worked. Isabella wasn’t an easy child to parent, either, she was always very loud and emotional, a screamer as a baby and had violent temper tantrums as a toddler. During her childhood she became very manipulative and learned to control and blackmail her sister into doing her chores, giving Issy her sweets and so on.
Although it was trivial stuff her father was very angry and made the decision that to correct this behaviour Issy should be sent away to a boarding school. At the age of 7 her bags were packed and she was taken by car to the imposing school several hours away without her sister. It was a school for difficult children like her and she hated every minute. For once, it was Issy who was being coerced and manipulated, bullied by the older children. During her time there she became withdrawn and quiet, nothing like her usual self.
What came later was far worse however, her parents – despite having sent her there – felt terribly guilty and tried to visit as soon as possible. Isabella was very excited about them coming; she asked an older girl to style her hair and put on her best dress. She waited by the entrance on the window seat for hours, her face by the glass as she watched the road. No one came but still she waited, it wasn’t until 5pm that evening that the school received the news that her family had been involved in a car crash. They were taken to hospital and her father, who had been driving, was put under observation. Thankfully, her mother and sister escaped with only cuts and bruises. A few days later her father had also recovered.
Whilst no one was hurt, the experience shook the family to the core and they realised the danger of losing each other, even if it was just to a boarding school. Isabella was removed from the school and welcomed back into her family, in total she’d spent four months there. Although it was less than one school year the experience had had a major effect on her attitude. She became more caring and protective of her sister whom she had nearly lost in the crash and less angry towards her family and friends.
As she started the mainstream school her sister attended she became more social and calm, gaining friends quickly. Her sister wasn’t so popular and it was simply by being related to Issy that she had a social life at all. As the pair grew up they had experiences apart, something their parents felt was important, that separated their personalities. Issy had a lot of experiences abroad that helped her independence from her family and allowed her to socialise with many different people. Fran had greater visits to relatives and camps for the intellectually gifted.
Despite these slightly different upbringings the twins are close; Issy takes care of Fran and encourages her confidence, Fran looks up to Issy. Isabella has several traits that make her, in some ways, the weaker of the two, however. She needs her friends and sister around to reassure her and doesn’t cope well with setbacks and loss. Fran is far more independent but it is true that without Isabella she would hardly interact with people at all. It is these weaknesses that have led them to rely on each other, they’ve vowed to never live apart.---OUT OF CHARACTER
