Francesca is tall and slim with a soft hourglass shape, her hair is long and dark, the ends just brushing the small of her back. When she was born her hair was fluffy and curly, so dark it was almost black but it has lightened since after years spent in the sun. Now, her hair is worn long with a side parting and fringe swept over her left eye. Her bangs are left loose but the rest of her hair is tied back either into a long plait or a ponytail that lies on her back. The sun’s rays have lightened her long hair into a mousy-brown colour with naturally darker highlights flecking the curtain of hair.

The sunlight has had little effect on her tan, or lack thereof, though. Her skin has refused to darken even with a childhood spent outdoors in the garden and at the park. As a child she was quite plain, her pale skin and long mousy hair let her blend into the background unlike her sister who made every effort to stand out. As a teenager though she matured, developing curves and a body type that led to unwanted attention from others. Most notable was a modelling offer from a large fashion company. This offer was exclusively for Fran as they felt she was more committed than her twin sister and better able to cope with the stresses of long modelling sessions and photo shoots. Predictably Fran declined and retreated back into her books.

She’s always sought to hide her looks behind baggy clothes and textbooks. Fran prefers to dress more conservatively, wearing three quarter lengths and jeans with t-shirts, long sleeve tops and jackets. Compared to her sister, her outfits are more modest and Fran is often embarrassed of being with her sister when she’s wearing her more risqué clothes. In terms of appearance, Fran acts more like a child with plaited hair and clothes that do little for her body.

PERSONALITY
Fran is a very shy girl with few friends, she isn’t very social and clings to her sister as the closest relationship she has. It is Isabella who encourages her to speak to other people and Fran has befriended a few of the girls that Issy associates with. Overall Fran would rather hide away with her books and avoid socialising all together but Issy wouldn’t allow it; she doesn’t understand why her sister doesn’t make friends as easily as she does.

Fran’s love of books and preference to shy away from a social life like her sister’s led to her excelling academically, she always got very good grades and had done very well at school. This led to a lot of rivalry between the twins as Fran was praised heavily by her parents for her academic success. The jealousy Issy felt towards Fran went unnoticed by the innocent girl; she loved her sister more than anything and couldn’t conceive her sister feeling anything less towards herself.

Her academic interests are wide, she has read a great many books but she shows a preference for Pokémon biology and genetics as well as psychology and Pokémon training. Her favourite author is Professor Hawthorne and as soon as she learnt that her starter Pokémon would be given to her by the Professor Fran became far more willing to leave home. Fran’s academic bookish side has made her an excellent Pokémon handler; she has had a part in training her parents’ Pokémon and has learnt a lot of battle strategy from her books.

Francesca is one of the least corrupt people you may ever meet, she means well for everyone and her sheltered childhood, surrounded by family, has meant she knows little of the darker side of the world. It is not in her nature to be manipulative, controlling or forceful. She’s gently, kind and very generous, particularly towards Isabella. Her shy nature, though, makes it difficult for her to seize opportunities that she rightly deserves. She isn’t confident enough to put herself forwards and has missed out on being a school prefect, going away on trips and making friends because she hasn’t the self-belief to do it. Even when it comes to competitions she is terrible at trying to win, Fran would rather let others win because they enjoy it more than she does. When they enter competitions together Isabella gets very annoyed at her sister’s lack of ambition. Due to this lack of confidence, Fran is spurred on by her sister; Isabella is the driving force behind Francesca.

HISTORY
Francesca Anne Michaels was born on the 4th of March, four minutes before her sister Isabella Jane Michaels, in the sleepy suburbs surrounding Featherwing City. Her parents are Christina Andrews and Justin Michaels; at the time, her mother was only 16 and her dad was 19. Despite her father having a very good job and her mother making the decision to have the children their parents didn’t approve so the couple were cut off from their family. This made the hard job of raising twins even more difficult as her mother had to stay at home to care for them alone whilst her father worked. Fran, unlike her sister, was a very easy child to care for, as a baby she rarely cried and hardly ever misbehaved as a toddler. As a child Fran remained very innocent as her sister became more controlling and manipulative. Francesca would do anything Issy asked, after all what were a few sweets in return for her sister’s love?

She was distraught when her parents sent Isabella away; the twins shared a large bed and slept with their hands locked together. Fran tried sleeping with teddies, holding their paws, and plushies, her arms hugging them tight. Nothing worked and she had a lot of difficulty in getting any sleep at all. What made things worse was that letters from Iz just revealed how deeply unhappy she was and how she was being bullied, tormented by the other students.

Francesca was so happy when she learnt that her parents were planning a visit to the school. She settled down in the car with a bag of sweets and a toy for Isabella as well as several books and her favourite pillow. It was the first time she slept properly for weeks because she was finally going to be back with her sister. However, on the way there the family car hit another car coming the wrong way down the road and was completely wrecked. A passer-by called for an ambulance and they were taken to hospital, her father was unconscious and Fran cried, worried about him. The driver of the other car was also in the ambulance, an old lady who was near-enough senile. She whispered her apologies, stories of her childhood and advice to Fran before she died as they were approaching the hospital. Fran had never felt so sad, she felt bad for the elderly lady but more than anything she was terrified that her father would also die.

Later, when the family was reunited Isabella made a promise to herself that she would never lose them again and she retreated further into the protective family circle, avoiding friends because it would mean losing time with her parents and sister. This was encouraged, accidentally, by her parents sending her on many visits to her estranged grandparents and cousins separate from her sister. Issy, meanwhile gained more friends and separated herself from the family, becoming more independent, though never from her sister. The twins relied on each other throughout their time in school and into early adulthood, rarely parting company.
