The car Max sat in was luxurious, the leather seats smelled really good and the mini bar was stacked to the brim with fizzy drinks and snacks though it had been nearly emptied on the journey. The windows were tinted and a pane of glass separated Max from the driver. They had been driving for many hours as they travelled across the region to the starting point for Max's pokemon journey. Eventually, though, the car drew to a halt and Max pushed a button to roll down the window. The car was outside a small white bungalow in a nice neighbourhood, the end of their journey.
Max stepped out of the black rolls royce and yawned sleepily, he'd napped on the way over but travelling always wore him out. The journey across the region from Oxgate City had been helped by his parents' car but this would be the last time they'd assist him in his journey. The white bungalow in front of him was beautiful, neat and tidy with a manicured garden and tidy lawns.
Max walked down the path and stepped up onto the porch. He pulled up his jeans and neatened his tshirt, as a sign of respect he pulled his hands out of his pockets and cleared his throat before ringing the doorbell.
Max waited patiently for the door to be answered, admiring the area around him. It was very different to the city he grew up in, always busy and full of people rushing around. He pulled his camera out of his rucksack and looked through the viewfinder, taking a shot of the garden bathed in the morning light. Not bad if he did think so himself. Max smiled to himself, he was going to get a lot of good photographs on this journey. Hanging the camera from his neck by the strap he turned to face the door again, wondering who would open it.

NEXIVUS LABORATORIES
For once, Professor Hawthorne had her nose buried in a book. It wasn't reading that she didn't usually like, it was the reports she had to do. Now that she had nothing of the sort to do, and she was reading the most fantastic fiction novel, it was really quite relaxing. Of course, the tea she was drinking as she read it helped make it even more relaxing.
Lilac was far less busy than usual as well, only needing to move the occasional cup to the kitchen. It was almost unnerving for her, really, to not need to bring order to an otherwise chaotic lab. She really hoped that the Professor finished reading soon, or at least needed to do another report.
Daffodil was out too, reading a book from earlier in the same series as her trainer. She wasn't as thrilled with it, though seemed interested non-the-less. She too was drinking tea, which she managed to finish just as there was a knock at the door.
"Can you get that, Lilac?" Professor Hawthorne asked, not willing to part with her book just yet. She had just gotten to an interesting part, and it wasn't as if she was the only one here capable of greeting people at the door.
< Maria, you're the professor, you should greet the new trainers. > the Psychic type scolded, using her powers to lift the book from the woman's hand. The psychic type then started reading the book herself, stopping almost instantly; it wasn't her sort of thing, it seemed.
The woman huffed childishly before standing. "I'll be back, Edward!" she proclaimed dramatically, causing the psychic type to chuckle and roll her eyes. Professor Hawthorne made her way over to the door swiftly, smiling at the boy in front of her. "Hello, I'm Professor Hawthorne, and this is Nexivus Laboratory! How may I help you?" She turned to her Raichu, already forgetting how much she didn't want her book taken away, and spoke once again. "Daffodil, dear, can you please get us some tea?" The elecric type nodded and darted off to do just that.

Max smiled as the door was swung open, Professor Hawthorne stood there, she was well known throughout the region and Max had even read one of her papers. What was also well known was her tea-drinking habits so Max wasn't surprised to hear her request for tea as soon as he stepped over the threshold. "Hi, I'm Maxwell Sanders," Max paled, he could have kicked himself, why did he introduce himself as Maxwell? "I mean, Max, Max Sanders," he flushed sheepishly. "I'm just starting to travel but I don't have a pokemon of my own. I was wondering if you would be able to give me one?"
Max was well known amongst his family and close friends for being a bit of a spoilt brat but he was definitely capable of being polite, particularly when it mattered like now. There was more evidence of his spoilt nature in his backpack though, it was weighed down with his laptop, mobile and MP4 player. Max was starting to consider that that might not have been such a good idea, the bag was getting pretty heavy. Although it would give him something to sell if he ran out of money now that he was cut off from his family's funds.
As he stepped over the doorstep he wiped his feet and surveyed the bungalow's interior. Daffodil, the raichu had run off to get tea and there was a Gardevoir sitting in the living room. Max was in awe, it was a fully evolved psychic type that he'd never seen apart from on TV. Seeing well-trained pokemon like that made him want to get his own and train them up to be that strong. He turned back to the Professor, "I was wondering, do you have any male nidoran? I really like that pokemon." he was really hoping she said yes, the poison pokemon was really cool and so strong, he secretly crossed his fingers, hoping she said yes.

"Hi, I'm Maxwell Sanders, the boy said, before hurriedly correcting himself. "I mean, Max, Max Sanders... I'm just starting to travel but I don't have a pokemon of my own. I was wondering if you would be able to give me one?"
Hawthorne nodded happily, "Oh, yes. Well, you've definitely come to the right place!" She beamed as the Raichu re-emerged with a tray of steaming tea. "Ah, fabulous!" She took a cup for herself, sipping it and sighing with happiness, "Oh, that's just delightful!" She murmured. "Let me just find you the Booklet..." She said, placing the tea on her desk. She edged towards the bookcase, passing Lilac on the way. for a fleeting moment, she wanted to snatch the book from her, sit down right there on the floor and ignore everything except for the amazing good looks and charms of the male protagonist... She shook her head slightly. That would be a terribly unprofessional thing to do.
"I was wondering, do you have any male nidoran? I really like that pokemon." said the boy from behind her. She looked around, surprised. Often trainers came with a specific pokemon in mind, although usually they were rare and far too valuable for her to give out as a starter.
"As a matter of fact, my dear, I do." She gave a mysterious smile and disappeared into the backroom. How she loved being able to award trainers what they wanted! She just thrived on making people happy.
She reappeared a few moments later, carrying a plastic bag of items and three pokeballs. "Here you go." She said, holding out the bag for him to take, "Some items to get you started." Hawthorne smiled, and released the first of the pokemon.
"This little guy is very friendly and he trusts others easily. Just make sure you don't betray his trust because he can hold a bit of a grudge." The Nidoran looked up at Max, his little tail wagging enthusiastically.
"This one is an arrogant little thing. He's very competitive, would be a strong battler but he can be moody and fickle." The second pokemon nodded at Max and then stomped around a little bit.
Hawthorne smiled affectionately at the duo. "I know you said males, but I do have a female too, if you'd be interested?" She released the pokemon and the female looked the males, "She likes to be the centre of attention and can get jealous, but she's loyal, affectionate and loving."
Hawthorne smiled at them all as the female trotted towards Max, jumping on the back of the first male, who rolled over. They play-fought happily, before the other waddled over, jumping into the fray a little too enthusiastically.
"Do any of them take your fancy?" She asked kindly.

Max smiled as the raichu returned with the tray, he took one of the offered mugs, "thank you." The tea was steaming hot and as he took a bigger mouthful than he'd intended it burned his tongue. Max let out a very quick 'eek' of pain before swallowing it and acting as though nothing had happened. He followed Professor Hawthorne nonchalanatly towards the bookcase, trying to ignore the burning of his charred tongue. Max looked grudgingly at the tea, blew on it and tried a sip, it was good.
Professor Hawthorne handed him some items, a few pokeballs, potions, a map. Max smiled, "Thank you," he responded quickly, trying not to lisp with his burned tongue. The items would definitely come in handy, especially as he was running out of money fast.
He beamed when Professor Hawthorne said she had some nidoran. She released the first one, a male, who was very sweet and friendly he was already wagging his tail. Max crouched down to stroke his back, avoiding the poison spines, and smiled at him. The second nidoran was also male and wasn't as interested in Max, he acknowledged him and then walked about the room. The third nidoran, a female, Max nearly laughed when he saw her pounce on the male he'd been stroking. The three nidoran were soon playfighting and it gave an idea of who would be the best at battling.
The second nidoran seemed a bit too enthusiastic about the play fight, the first was perhaps not enthusiastic enough. The female nidoran was very playful but she seemed that she would be a good battler too. Max bit his lip, he didn't know which to choose. Since he was little he'd wanted a nidoking but the female nidoran seemed like the best choice. He didn't want to upset the first nidoran either, the friendly pokemon looked about ready to jump in a pokeball and come with him. "I wish I could take all of them," he smiled to Professor Hawthorne, "I actually really like the female nidoran." He bit his lip again, trying to completely make up his mind. Max let a breath out then nodded decisively, "could I take the female nidoran, please?"

"Just fill that in and you're free to go with your new pokemon!" She beamed. Congratulations! You have received a NIDORAN!

Max took the offered pokeball and held it for a moment, almost in disbelief that he actually had a pokemon of his own, before he clipped the pokeball to his belt. "Thank you," Max replied, taking the clipboard, he filled in his details and answered the questions on the form. Max passed the clipboard back to Professor Hawthorne with a smile.
He was anxious to get going to Featherwing City but first he had something for his new pokemon. Max unclipped the pokeball and relelased the female nidoran. She bounded happily to his feet, ni, ni the small pokemon nuzzled his leg. Max bent down, "here, this is for you," he tied a ribbon around her neck so a bow rested on her back. "I'm going to call you Chikara," he decided, "It means strength." Chikara seemed intent on staying as close to Max's feet as possible and he smiled as, when he stepped backwards, Chikara rushed to follow.
"Thank you so much, Professor Hawthorne." Max was so happy to have his starter pokemon and finally be out of his house and on his own, travelling. Max headed towards the door, ready to go towards Featherwing City.
