-- ALEX "BRAIDS" DEVOLD-- NAME Alex "Braids" DeVold
NICKNAMES Braids. That's the only name he gives.
AGE 23
GENDER Male
HOMETOWN Blackthorn, Jhoto
APPEARANCE
Braids stands at 6’1”, the average height for men in his family, and weighs around 148 lbs. He has an unusually small frame, which much to his displeasure makes his long arms and legs look lanky. However, he was lucky enough to inherent his father’s broad shoulders, the most masculine attribute of his build. Also, he is slightly underweight, which in his opinion makes him seem frail. However, he has no desire to be muscular, as he sees those men to look disproportionate, and wonders how some women could ever find that attractive, that, and he is honestly too lazy to bother building up any muscle tone. Though he had been trying to gain some weight to make himself look more healthy, he is at odds with the fact that many of the girls he comes in contact with find him attractive the way he is. Ultimately, he chose the attention over a healthier appearance, and is occasionally guilty of not eating to maintain what the women find desirable, even if he does not always find it desirable himself.
Braids, like all of the DeVolds, has vivid red hair. He has kept it long ever since he was quite young, believing the length suits his face shape perfectly. He and his father have often gotten into arguments over Braids’ choice to keep it long; as he believes it makes his son look unflatteringly feminine. Braids generally won out in the fights, owing mainly to his mother’s siding with him. Braids’ hair has a very soft and silky texture to it, as he puts more emphasis into taking care of it over almost everything. He wears it in a variety of styles, though he usually has it up in two long, albeit thick, braids, as his nickname suggests. He only takes down his hair when going to bed, washing, and to brush it out.
Braids has dark ruddy brown, almost red, eyes, as almost everyone in his family has. They are almond shaped and perfectly proportioned and spaced, a trait he inherited from his mother. His eyes are perhaps the favorite of his features, because he is so deft at manipulating emotions through them, and because he believes he can easily seduce women just by looking at them (still a game he likes to play.) Generally, his eyes give off a cold and aloof air, and oftentimes he finds them absentmindedly narrowed, this being an inherent display of his arrogance. But in most cases, he wears a set of goggles over his eyes - perhaps a sure way to mask any sort of malicious intentions from shining through.
Braids’ face is long and thin, greatly resembling his father’s. He has high, very prominent cheekbones and a narrow jaw line. Though the bridge of his nose is a bit wide, Lucius believes it sits well on his face, and is grateful in the least that it is perfectly centered. He has the typical DeVold paleness, and in dim light he can almost appear ghostlike, that fact does not bother him, however, as he is proud to bare the typical traits of his family.
Braids has been careful over the years not to scar or damage his physical appearance in any way, as that would be an ultimate flaw in his quest for physical perfection. Braids is almost like a woman in the degree he follows and keeps up with the latest trends. His preferred color is black, and he likes to pair it with an array of colors. Too, he makes certain that anything he wears fits him properly, and he will not tolerate anything too tight or too loose on him.
PERSONALITY
The one lasting impression of Alex is a puffed-up sense of superiority. In his mind, there is nobody better than him, and he would be hard-pressed to find a flaw with himself if somebody asked. He's managed to develop a very distinct ego, and easily thinks of himself as some kind of role model for others to look up to and seek to emulate with all of their little hearts. His obvious high opinion of himself is apparent in the way that he converses with others, definitely. With his poised voice, he somehow manages to both give the impression of genuine interest in another person, and convey a deprecating attitude, as well.
He's got a tendency to throw out remarks and comments that, whilst droll and twisted witty, are also rather mentally disturbing, given that they're ridiculously morbid and, in turn, quite threatening. Even the most innocent of phrases can be delivered with an edgy, grim twist to it. There's a certain predatory bent to his personality, and it's easy to think of him as being sinister and foreboding. He likes to maintain control and fear in his discussions with others, and manipulate emotions through his "innocent" body language shifts and changes in vocal inflection. His voice itself is so generally pleasant, its simple for him to casually twist would-be promises or distract those desiring to get the best of him to change the subject, or shift to a different point of interest.
He can play a person as deftly a crooked poker player. He gets no greater joy than from tweaking people's heartstrings and their minds, and working them into malleable puppets for his own cause and purpose, making it his particular pleasure in life is to control the lives of others. He'll personally test the ripples of a drop of water, push the envelope as much as he can, and if he happens to stumble across somebody's breaking point along the way, well then that just makes the experience that much more enjoyable. With an eager willingness to plainly stroll so callously over the tops of others (equipped with the knowledge of their insecurities and imperfections) just makes him all the more ruthless. More often than not, he'll face someone with a smile on his face and an avaricious gleam in his eye, but behind that thin veneer is a shrewd, impossibly calculating mind.
One of these "sinister" aspects that Braids possesses is his foreboding jealousy. He doesn't like it when other people stake a claim to things that he believes are his - this includes others who he has taken a deliberate interest in, Pokemon, the virus, and even how the world is run. The problem is that instead of treating these creatures as his equals, he acts as if they owe him some great favor for simply being their trainer. At best he's stifling towards them, and at worst, dictatorial, although he has been known to become attached to a select few pokemon. Can't say the same for people.
To say that Braids is suspicious would be an understatement. He's all about keeping his schemes, plots and feelings (what little he experiences) bottled up and played close to his chest. If there's one thing that living amongst the madness of both worlds, it's that creatures are treacherous, always looking for a chance to second guess or double-cross others, and if he wants to avoid being the one with a knife poking out of his back, he tries to be the first and only one to do the stabbing. Still, it's not as though he's particularly...honest when it comes to his motives or his goals. Because of his outward image and growing reputation, its quite clear he tries his hardest to keep his agenda hidden at all costs, especially from public eyes, from those few who just might actually have the power to prod him from his metaphorical throne.
Even with the most keenest of care, sometimes others (grudgingly) end up getting the best of him. Unfortunately for them, Braids never takes a challenge face down. He will not rest until what he perceives to be that glaring injustice is resolved, often in the most brutal way conceivable. He can't stand the idea of humiliation or being beaten, and if it happens, so help him, he will do anything to eradicate the offending adversary. This is perhaps the only time that he is ever close to being patient - in most all other instances, tends to be frank and flighty.
HISTORY
Orphaned at birth, Alex DeVold was adopted by Jane and Drew DeVold. Jane was a photographer Drew was a computer programer responsible for making cameras. Due to their busy schedule, Alex was a single child, most likely because his parents feared that they wouldn't have enough time for more than one child. Still, growing up, he couldn't be called the most outspoken child. He had friends, but his friends were cold and unloving, stuffed pokemon that his dad made for him to keep him company on his long business trips. He was mostly raised by his mom in his young years, and even young Jane knew that there was something lacking in her son that was so painfully apparent in other children: he didn't socialize well at all with others. His bitter attitude with pokemon began when he was walking outside of his house in Blackthorn, near Ice Path, and was kidnapped by a Jynx. He didn't find a way to escape until the pokemon left him to search for more food.
Towards people, however, it started after an accident at day care, which he had to be removed from another child, blood on his hand. After months of family consoling and doctor visits, Alex was given light medication to deal with his social awkwardness. He was home schooled in his younger years, and then sent back to public school. Surprisingly, though, Alex was a model student; he got straight A's and excelled in his classes – the only problem was that he still couldn't make connections with his peers without having to go to extreme lengths. And extreme lengths usually always ended up with threats or promises of protection, lunch, or money, which he always had plenty of. He enjoyed manipulating his peers in this manner, but the other children were wise to stay clear of him, even though the teachers were absolutely smitten with his good manners and classroom smarts. This continued onto high school, where he became eager to learn more about his parents which included their professions.
Photography was easy enough to understand. Alex particularly loved technology. But his antics led him to questionable things and questionable people that most people wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. Places that treated pokemon poorly seemed to be what they enjoyed going to the most, but Braids, always eager to backstab first before being backstabbed himself, ratted out many establishments and untrustworthy people to further enhance his acting and manipulative skills.
Confident in his abilities, he turned his attention to coding and numbers, mathematical equations used in technology that created the core net of the software he used and dealt with. Now, with a high paying job as a visual journalist, he's turned his attentions towards catching and training pokemon for his own benefits, while not notorious cruel, isn't generally benign either.
