The last time Griff visited the arena, he'd lifted most of the valuables from the unguarded locker room, which had been politely devoid of security cameras for sake of privacy. This time around, Griff noticed the bright red pinpoints of light from the new cameras installed throughout the place. On one hand, Griff applauded their efforts to ensure a safe and secure place for pokemon trainers to battle. On the other hand, Griff visited the arena's dropbox to leave the note that he felt rather uncomfortable changing with all the cameras about.
<Emol?> Volta asked as she flitted about. "Sorry, you're not up for a fight. Not if I can help it. Give someone else a turn, will you?" The emolga pouted her displeasure, but then she shrugged and returned to her pokeball.
The plan was to show Bess and Garnet to the arena and see how they did. He trusted Garnet would do fine, and she'd expressed her interests in battling many a time already. Bess was a different story. She seemed happy just to live alongside Griff, and often she was inseparable from him. He suspected she wouldn't care for arena battling at all, but Bess did have a competitive nature that might see as much joy in fighting as she did in arguing with Griff over whether or not he actually needed to eat his vegetables. (He didn't need to, obviously.)
Griff exited to the stadium, carefully noting the locations of the security cameras as he went. He walked up to the trainer's box chalked into the ground and waited there for his opponent to show up. 267 words I really hope my muse comes back to life soon :\ notes espa! tag

Fran sat on one of the benches in the changing rooms, her backpack was stored in a locker and she'd slipped her jacket off and hung it on one of the pegs. Fran was completely ready to go, she had no idea why Issy was taking so long. Francesca was wearing a pair of denim high waisted shorts and a pink tshirt with flip-flops on her feet, her hair was swept back into a ponytail. Isabella had changed into a mini dress that clung to her body, boosting the size of her chest and exaggerating her tiny waist. The dress was a pale blue and ended mid-thigh; it was so short a strong breeze could have meant she was flashing her pants to everyone. A white belt around her waist held her pokeballs. Issy had curled her hair so it fell in ringlets that framed her face, she did look very pretty but Fran didn't see why Issy was getting dressed up to impress a pokemon trainer she had never met.
Issy hadn't spoken to anyone apart from her sister and Nurse Joy in the past two weeks. Being a girl who was used to having a large group of friends and the interest of a lot of boys this was upsetting for her, she felt as if it was something about her that had changed. It had damaged her usually high levels of self esteem. The idea behind her dress was to get as much male attention as possible but her sister was very disapproving.
Finally, after adding another coat of mascara and wriggling her dress up slightly, Issy was ready to go. She touched the two pokeballs at her waist, deciding which one to use; she had a vulpix named Kirei and a machop called Tsuyoi. Fran also had two pokemon, an oddish called Odori and a phanpy named Asobi. Fran had already decided on using Asobi but Issy was still wavering, eventually she decided the fire-type, her vulpix, would be good for this match.
Double match, Griff has two pokemon, Issy and Fran have one each.

The wait for his opponent took a while, not that Griff particularly minded, and at one point Volta popped out of her pokeball as if her sheer presence could win her a place in the upcoming battle. "Tell you what, Volta, one of these days, I'll go sneaking about the industrial complex, and you can electrocute however many wild pokemon you want, alright? I already know you're battle-ready; let the others have their turn."
Volta rolled her eyes, but beyond that, she didn't seem too upset. <Emolga,> she stated, point-blank, and planted herself on Griff's shoulder, keen on watching the battle unfold. "As long as you stay off of the field," Griff allowed.
When his opponents--plural, Griff noticed--finally arrived, he looked up to take an estimation of them. Twins, obviously, although from a distance, they looked different enough that they might've been fraternal. After a moment though, Griff decided they were very obviously identical twins, and it was just their choice of dress and carriage that set them so decisively apart. Granted, he wasn't exactly looking at their faces, because Arceus did something good when he created these two pairs of perfect legs.
"And here I thought I'd be staring at another hiker for an entire battle," Griff said with a warm grin. He'd had his eyes' fill for now though, and he released Garnet and Bess from the pokeballs. The vulpix, her blind eyes covered in old, grim scars, and the togepi, a considerably happier looking character, took to the field. Garnet stretched, perhaps too hungry for a fight, while Bess didn't seem to care either way. He hadn't counted on them needing to work together, but well, trial by fire worked fine by him.

Issy walked out into the arena first, her dress shifting in the breeze so it revealed a little too much thigh. Fran flushed as she saw how her sister looked, she was practically naked. Francesca came out more slowly, lagging behind her more confident twin. They stood in the trainer box together, Fran's hand found Issy's as she grew more nervous, the other trainer looked older and more experienced. "Come on, you'll be fine," Issy encouraged, "You've chosen Asobi, right?"
Fran nodded, reaching for the pokeball. Issy unclipped the pokeball holding her vulpix Kirei, both pokemon were released. Fran's phanpy trumpeted happily, running out on to the field towards the other pokemon. Issy's vulpix stretched, looking around the field, curious about everything. Issy looked their opponent up and down, the first thing she noticed was his hair - bright magenta and long it certainly set him apart. It was his body that Issy really focused on though, taller than she was and with a slim, athletic build. Issy smiled, eager to get started she heard the boy give the go ahead, even offering for them to go first. "Start with a tailwhip, Kirei then follow it up with an ember attack on the togepi." Kirei shook her long, shiny and glossy tail, crouched down in a pose that made her look very threatening. Fran gave her phanpy his instructions after a smile of encouragement from her sister, "Use defense curl and then tackle the togepi." This strategy had been Issy's idea, by taking out the pokemon that appeared to be more of a threat, and togepi certainly was a threat with it's metonome techniques. After that the two pokemon could team up on the second opponent. Fran glanced at Issy, she was worried that her twin wouldn't focus with a male opponent, she was already looking him up and down. Issy was prone to ignoring everything else in order to get male attention, just focusing on the guy. Fran sighed as she noticed Issy playing with her hair flirtatiosly. Asobi, the phanpy, curled up in to a ball and made her muscles tense to offer greater protection from physical attacks. She uncurled suddenly and ran at the opponent, putting force behind the movement to give a firm tackle. Kirei bounded lightly after the phanpy, aiming a blast at the togepi after her teammate had moved away. Kirei used tail whip on Bess, then ember on Bess Asobi used defense curl then tackle on Bess [/blockquote][/blockquote]

As much as the tail whip startled her, Bess haphazardly darted aside from the vulpix's embers, and the proximity of the flames sparked something within her. Surprise and discomfort turned into an angry scowl--which honestly looked more adorable than anything else--and she turned to face down the phanpy's incoming tackle. The tackle sent her off her feet, and she tumbled through the air, her egg-like form at least properly balanced for that much, to land deftly on her feet. <Pii!> she accused the elephant pokemon, and Griff could only hope she wasn't criticizing her opponents' battle etiquette. He wasn't sure such thing as battle etiquette even existed in a pokemon arena, but if it did, Bess would surely know.
"The phanpy first, then," Griff agreed. Garnet, more accustomed to the rigor of battle, had already circled behind the phanpy as it charged for the togepi, and she she chased its scent, being well aware of the situation even despite her blind eyes. "Return the tail whip, then use faint attack, Garnet." Nodding her understanding, the vulpix rushed in with a feint of her paw.
Psychic power already gathered around Bess, and Griff wasn't sure she'd be following orders for the rest of the fight. Griff would've regretted bringing her to the arena altogether, but he'd only picked her to fight so he could see if she were battle-worthy. The answer so far? Kind of. She wasn't as shy as he'd expected--in fact, she wasn't shy at all now--but she didn't have the discipline or presence of mind that he'd come to prize in his original pokemon, and Garnet too. <Pi piii> the togepi muttered under her breath, and she sent a psychic attack toward the phanpy.
Although perhaps he shouldn't criticize Bess too much as far as presence of mind went. Griff's wasn't exactly in the arena either, and he found his attention wandering toward the opposing trainers--the quiet one just as much as the one making eyes at him. Nothing like a study in contrasts, right? Francesca saw the vulpix moving behind her phanpy, its movements were practiced and lythe despite the pokemon's obvious lack of sight. She heard its trainers command and reacted quickly, "Behind you, Asobi! Use defense curl!"
The phanpy snapped into a rigid ball as the vulpix's sucker punch hit home, the defense curl protected her slightly but the attack had been unavoidable. "Asobi, tackle the vulpix!" The phanpy uncurled, turning quickly to tackle the vulpix whilst it was in close range. Isabella tutted, but directed Kirei to help, "Kirei, use your tailwhip." The move would hopefully lower the other vulpix's defense and make the tackle hit even harder. Attacking both pokemon wasn't their battle plan but Fran reacted rashly whenever anyone harmed her pokemon. Issy was desperate to win, she wanted to impress the first boy that the twins had seen in ages and she wasn't going to settle for a loss, no matter how close. Though the trainer had given no orders Issy sensed the psychic power accumulating around the togepi. She knew the attack well from her training with Kirei, it was an extrasensory attack. "Kirei, the togepi's going to use extrasensory, return it, quickly!" Kirei nodded, opening her mouth as her eyes glowed gold she gathered psychic energy sending out a rainbow coloured blast at the togepi. A similar attack hit Asobi who shuddered, automatically curling up into a ball as the psychic attack hit but it did little to protect her from the special attack. Kirei used tailwhip on Garnet, then extrasensory on Bess. Asobi used defense curl then tackle on Garnet. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

Garnet wasn't happy when the phanpy's defense curl left her blow glancing. With only the quickest flick of her ear towards Bess--who looked like she wasn't going to be working cool-headedly with anybody--Garnet flung herself to the side, just in time to see the phanpy's tackle skirting safetly astray. It took a moment for her to get on her feet again, and that wasn't quick enough for her to come to Bess' defense, not that she could've intervened in a psychic offense.
"You're going to have to work with Bess, Garnet. I'm not sure she was ready for a battle after all," Griff said to Garnet. The vulpix shrugged, and she likely believed from the start that the togepi wouldn't be the most useful ally.
Bess growled fiercely when the extrasensory attack struck home, generally furious at the world. She looked worse for wear, but more intent on fighting until her wit's end than she had ever before. "Bess, don't stress it out. It's just a fight," Griff said. Mentality came first, he knew, and he always forgot that despite Bess' mothering, she was newborn and unused to the climate of a battle.
<Piii~> she replied, wary now of more attacks. The togepi took a deep breath, and it didn't see to calm her any beyond clearing out a bit of pain. She shuddered, and Griff hoped it wasn't from any wounds, but when she recovered, another burst of psychic power lashed out towards the phanpy.
"Garnet, go now! Use energy ball, then meet the other vulpix." Garnet sprang into action as soon as Bess made her move, which she'd been waiting for the whole time. With a practiced ease, she timed her nature-based attack to strike as Bess' extrasensory did. With her attack out of the way, she dashed to meet the other vulpix head-on. Throwing her head back, she roared with all her might, blind eyes flashing. Fran heard the other trainer's order and reacted fast, "Asobi, run forwards, dodge the energy ball!"
The ball of green energy narrowly missed the phanpy's back legs as she charged towards the togepi. Bess used extrasensory and the rainbow beam of energy hit the phanpy squarely in the centre of the chest, throwing her back. It was made worse because, by dodging the other attack, she'd run towards the other - from the frying pan into the fire. Asobi whined in pain and Fran gasped but of her own accord she shook himself and charged, anger and desperation fuelling her spontaneous attack on the togepi. Asobi was angry that the togepi had hurt her and wanted to tackle Bess hard enough to send her flying. Fran could see the togepi was young and wasn't taking the fight well, her trainer reassuring her. She hoped Asobi wasn't attacking too harshly. Kirei heard the trainer ordering the other vulpix to attack her and she turned to face Garnet. Kirei tried to look menacing but as Garnet's eyes glowed and she roared something came over her. Kirei ran back to Issy who was speechless, jumped up and tapped her trainer's pokeball, releasing Issy's machop - Tsuyoi. Tsuyoi blinked in confusion before running out on to the field, leaving Kirei hiding behing Issy's legs. Isabella bent down and ruffled her fur, "it's okay, I know roar does that to you." Although it had been unexpected this left her with a fresh pokemon that hadn't taken any hits or used energy by attacking. Issy smiled, "Tsu, start things off with a leer then use low kick on Garnet! He raced towards the vulpix, closing the distance, his eyes glowed brightly as he looked threateningly at the vulpix. Suddenly he dropped to the floor swinging his powerful, muscular leg aiming to take the legs out from beneath Garnet, hopefully bringing her to the floor. Asobi dodged then used tackle on Bess. Kirei returned. Tsuyoi was sent out. Tsuyoi used leer then low quick on Garnet. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

Garnet gave no quarter, which didn't surprise Griff. From what he'd seen of her from training, she'd hounded his solosis like a vengeful spirit, all keen, disciplined determination. Eyes or no eyes, her attitude towards a battle meant more to Griff than her ability to see. She didn't hear the energy ball make contact when it was supposed to, and that was all Garnet needed to know. With her keen sense of smell, she took aim again and threw a second energy ball, glowing green and yellow with solar strength, at the phanpy.
The togepi did her best to flee the tackle on stubby feet, but ultimately failed. The tackle popped her into the air again, but this time she reacted with a touch more grace. She span in the air and landed, somewhat miraculously, on her feet--then she toppled and fell over off balance. <Piii~~> she cried shrilly, more in mindless panic than anything else, but even when she pulled herself up onto her feet, she was unsteady. Trembling, both with fear and determination, she took deep, even breaths, calming herself.
When the opposing vulpix abandoned the field, Griff saw Garnet immediately breathe a sigh of relief. He cursed himself for not noticing her discomfort earlier--he shouldn't known she wouldn't have liked facing down another of her breed, not when her family had abused her and turned her out. "Sorry--" he began, only to be cut off by a kind, even gracious, but extremely curt <Vul.> Garnet pointed her nose at Bess, clearly indicating that Griff ought to worry about the togepi over her.
Garnet's ability to function without orders every second from Griff gave him time to mind Bess, who certainly needed the attention more. "Keep your wits about you, Bess. There's nothing more important than that," Griff told her gently. The time was invaluable for him and even moreso for Bess. He'd taught children to pick a lock with sirens going off around them and cops knocking on the door--this wasn't much different. "You're not alone--there's Garnet. She's been fighting the phanpy with you. Work with her."
The machop's first attack toppled Garnet to the floor. The fast, physical attacker was too stark a difference from the ranged powers of the vulpix before for her to have adjusted tactics so soon, and Garnet stumbled back to her feet, spitting choice words in her own language, then using tail whip to deceive the Machop's defenses.
<Togepiii~> Bess said, no doubt chiding Garnet for her language. Nevertheless, psychic energy radiated around her, and she aimed another extrasensory towards the Machop. Then, with a great deal of nerve, Bess smiled disarmingly, putting all her charm to good use. Fran smiled as the tackle hit, her phanpy was doing so good. "Asobi, use tackle again on Bess!"
The togepi was in the midst of a charm attack on the machop and Asobi had to admit she looked adorable. She shook that thought from her head and curled up into a ball, strengthening her defenses before she attacked. Springing out into a strong tackle she put her weight behind the move. As the tackle came to an end she heard her trainer's fright, Fran shouted "Asobi, move!" She tried to move but the order had taken her by surprise so she wasn't quick enough. The green ball of energy hit hard and knocked her off of her feet. Asobi groaned, phan, as she got to her feet. The grass attack had hurt but it had taught her to watch Garnet more closely. Tsuyoi glanced at the phanpy as he attacked Bess, just in time to catch a glimpse of her charm attack, she was so cute but he knew that move well. He wrenched his head away but the move had put him off guard and the psychic attack hit him hard. He grabbed his head with his hands as pain racked his skull. Fortunately he shook it off quickly but an ache lingered in his head. He turned his attention back to Garnet in time to see her crouch and shake out her tail. He felt slightly dizzy and his head throbbed. Fighting through it he leered at the vulpix, his eyes glowing red. Quickly following the leer attack, he kicked his leg out, trying to take Garnet down with another low quick. Issy shouted words of encouragement, "C'mon Tsuyoi, ignore the pain just keep attacking. Asobi, Bess is getting tired don't let up!" The pokemon nodded firmly and it deepened their resolve to keep fighting for themselves and for their trainers. Fran looked across at her sister, happy that her eyes were focused on the battle rather than on the boy standing across from them. Issy's dress caught in the wind, lifting up slightly to reveal even more of her tanned legs. She pushed it back down but she wasn't too bothered about showing off her body. Fran flushed at Issy's nonchalant attitude, she was worried that she'd get herself into trouble with boys one of these days. Tsuyoi used leer and low quick on Garnet. Asobi used defense curl and tackle on Bess. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

Bess saw the tackle coming this time, as there was nothing like being rammed into twice by a phanpy to teach you that being hit kind of sucked, and she ran like no one's business. Her stubby feet didn't carry her very far, but they didn't need to. Once she was safely out of the tackle's trajectory, Bess cried out a brief <Piii!> in both self-congratulation and relief, but she weary and tired of the fight all the same.
On his shoulder, Volta who had been quiet this whole time, her mind entirely focused on the battle, finally commented with an unimpressed <Mol.> "Everyone starts out somewhere, and she's doing fine. Battling isn't like crime; there's no consequences for mistakes," Griff replied softly, so no one else could hear.
Garnet danced out of the way of the machop's low kick, having heard it coming early from the sound of the fighting pokemon's swift movements. She smelled Bess' fatigue, and it was clear that she had to decide between fighting the machop to continuing to try to help the togepi. "Cover Bess, Garnet. Don't let her fight alone in her first battle," Griff commanded, and Garnet nodded her understanding.
The vulpix rushed in close to the phanpy, her paws moving to form a clever feint before striking in a unexpected Faint Attack. She couldn't defend Bess from both of the opposing pokemon, so she chose onto to stand between Bess and Asobi--at the least, she could force the Asobi into some acrobatics if the phanpy wanted to tackle the togepi again.
Garnet saw the psychic attack strike the machop true, and she issued her own command. <Vul pix vul!> she barked at the togepi, who blinked inefficiently. <Pix vul,> she repeated, not unkindly but certainly urgently.
With that, Bess channeled her only attack again, sending all that remained of her psychic strength towards the machop. Bess managed to avoid Asobi's tackle and Fran frowned. The togepi was getting tired and they couldn't let up now. Garnet rushed forwards in a faint attack, it was unavaoidable and Asobi was hit hard. She quickly shook it off but Fran knew she was getting tired. "Stay with it Asobi, just keep fighting."
Issy sensed the psychic energy coming from Bess and shouted a warning to Tsuyoi, "Tsuyoi, it's a psychic attack, block it out." Kirei had practiced her extrasensory with Tsuyoi and he'd learned to blank his mind, shutting out the psychic attacks. Given the warning he protected himself from the worst of the pain. Issy heard the other trainer's order and frowned. They were starting to work together, her and Fran needed to get Tsuyoi and Asobi to do that too. "Guys, group up, help each other." Tsuyoi ran forwards happily to join Asobi as they faced down the other pokemon. "Asobi, use growl on Garnet." Fran's phanpy growled cutely, trying to put off vulpix from attacking again. "Tsuyoi get in Garnet's way." Tsuyoi moved to try and get in between Garnet and Bess, trying to split up the pair and prevent their cooperation. "Tsuyoi use low kick on Garnet." Issy hoped that by breaking up the pair and attacking simultaneously the attacks would hit. "Now, Asobi tackle Bess, work together." The pokemon coorinated so they attacked in unison, each focusing on one of the opponents and putting their weight into the attacks. Tsuyoi moved swiftly, trying to avoid excess noise that would warn Garnet of his movements, and aiming to take her legs out from underneath her. Asobi moved quickly into a full body tackle, trying to send Bess flying. Garnet saw Tsuyoi's attack coming, and she didn't bother dodging aside from the low kick. This time, she was ready for it, and the impact didn't throw her off her stride. "Focus on the phanpy," Griff said. Garnet sidestepped around the machop, her focus intent on bringing down the phanpy, who had already been weakened. Unfortunately, she didn't make it in time to defend Bess.
Bess panicked again, her resolve not holding strong enough in her worn out state, and psychic power radiated out from her in every direction, most of it striking at nothing, but in the end, she aimed the better portion of her strength at the phanpy just as the tackle hit. This time, she didn't tumble through the air, instead being punted off to the side. Swaying, she did her best to stand, but Griff decided he'd had enough of it. "Let's call it at that, Bess. You put in a good effort, take a break, girl," he said. With a glowing light, the togepi returned to her pokeball, dazed and tired, but perhaps stronger for the experience.
Two against one weren't the best odds for the vulpix, even though she had more battle experience than either of her opponents. The vulpix turned her head to assess the machpo and the phanpy with the senses available to her. "We need to take down the phanpy, Garnet. Don't let the fight stretch on with the numbers against you."
In agreement, Garnet charged up another energy ball, solar energy gathering about her, and fired it at the phanpy. To the machop, she whipped her tail about, hoping to draw out any flaw in the machop's defenses.

Issy breathed a sigh of relief as Bess fainted but the psychic energy she sensed before the togepi was returned worried her. It was directed towards her sister's phanpy who had little experience of the psychic attack. Asobi shuddered as the psychic attack added to the throb in her head, it was a lot weaker as Bess hadn't been as strong but Asobi was getting tired. "We need to take down the phanpy, Garnet. Don't let the fight stretch on with the numbers against you." Fran frowned then saw Garnet's movements, she realised what was happening and shouted "Asobi, move. It's energy ball!"
Her phanpy reacted quickly, shaking off the throbbing in her head and ran to the left. Throwing herself forward, Asobi skidded in the dirt before spinning around. Her head really did hurt but she trusted her body to last a little while longer. "Are you okay, Asobi?" The phanpy nodded firmly, she refused to give up on Fran until her body really couldn't take anymore. "Okay then, tackle attack." Asobi set her eyes on Garnet and ran forwards into a full body tackle, giving it her all. Issy was desperate for Tsuyoi, who was relatively unharmed, to help Asobi, "Tsuyoi, help Asobi use leer" Tsuyoi's eyes glowed red as he glared at the vulpix, trying to weaken its defences before Asobi's tackle hit. "Now, use low kick!" Tsuyoi swung his leg out, trying to trip Garnet and take her to the ground. Asobi dodged and used tackle. Tsuyoi used leer and low kick. She would be attacked by both the phanpy and machop now, both Garnet and Griff were well aware of that. Between the two, he suspected that the phanpy, who had already been tired out, would deliver the softer blow. "Avoid the machop, Garnet. Use faint attack on the phanpy," he ordered.
Garnet faced down the phanpy's tackle, but unlike the togepi, she was made of tougher stuff (although, quite frankly, most things are less fragile than egg shells). She let the tackle throw her back, not losing her cool when the impact sent her several steps back. Nimbly, she regained her balance, and rushed in for a faint attack.
She made her contact and then turned to focus on the machop. A deft sidestep let her avoid the low kick, and with that attack safely cleared, Garnet rushed off to the side, wanting to put some distance between her and the machop. She didn't need much, but just a few meters meant a split second more time for her to react, and without her sight, that time was invaluable to her.
