In 2012, the world as we knew it ended. The world went up in
massive natural disasters, and from those disasters the Helium
Wars began. After the Helium Wars, the world was we knew it
was just a faded memory. It’s now 2019, and the mega-corpor
ation Better Living Industries (also known as BLI or BL/ind) rules
over much of the remaining world, including Battery City (which
is only miles from a crater that used to be Los Angeles). With
their promise of safety, peace, and prosperity, it wasn’t all that
hard for BLI to gain control. Giving up your personal freedoms
and taking pills every day didn’t seem that bad to the most pe
ople. Inside of the cities are controlled temperatures and no
radiation. Outside of the cities are the radiation-filled waste
lands known as the zones. That’s where the rebel freedom
fighters of the world, the outlaws known as the Killjoys, live.
They work to sabotage BLI, while BLI works to kill or rehabilitate
the killjoys. Whichever side you take, you will constantly be
tested. The Killjoy life has a romanticized (if not dusty) glamour
to the civilians and BLI workers, who have everything from their
jobs to their emotions heavily regulated. The safety that Battery
City loyalty offers can be tempting to Killjoys who are eating can
ned dog food for the third day in the road and have to stay up
for 48 hours to avoid an ambush.
Eventually, you have to ask yourself: in an anonymous world,
would you destroy something perfect to make something beautiful?
