Chh-ching! Chh-ching!
The sound of two coins being snapped together.
Chh-ching! Chh-ching!
Two cents was all she had left now. Only her two cents to rub together. Penniless and pocket-picked, she was left with nothing but her clothes, makeup, and the book she was working on, all thrown in her messenger bag styled purse. What little she now had couldn't get her down now though, not when she got so much in return.
Ashleigh was finally in the Nexivus region. She was among only a few to leave at the stop, the other train passengers looking at them leaving with wary eyes, but she and her comrades quickly parted ways.
Despite the dangers held within the region, Nexivus looked very pleasant. The weather was beautiful and there weren't any obvious signs of the living evil. Ashleigh kept to the cities and close to people as often as she could, navigating with the train maps for the entire morning until she finally made it to Professor Hawthorne's Laboratory.
Ashleigh had read about Professor Hawthorne and was eager to meet her. Her research team was leading the search for a cure of the devastating virus and free Pokemon were given away at her lab so that everyone can have some protection against the infected Pokemon. The location of Professor Hawthorne's lab was also ideal for starting out a true exploration of the Nexivus region. She may have had to spend all of her money to get here, but if she had what it took to become a righteous Pokemon trainer, then she'd be doubly paid back.
Walking closer to the lab, Ashleigh went over the specific paths she'd have to take in the long journey ahead of her. She had decided long ago when she was a child what Pokemon she would first be able to call her own and desperately hoped Professor Hawthorne had one to spare . Meowth's evolution, Persian, just fit her too perfectly to exclude from her party, and Ashleigh had taken so strongly to the creatures that she just couldn't imagine a stronger bond forming between any other Pokemon as her first.
Crossing her fingers and hoping for the best, Ashleigh tucked her hair behind her eyes and briefly made sure she was presentable before marshaling the courage she knew she had to enter the laboratory, knowing that she would emerge with some company.
ooc: I want a Meowth, please!

At this particular point in time, the Professor was far too busy with her own work, and of course tea, to have noticed much at all. She was currently sifting through about five stacks of papers as well as emails on her computer, looking through all the things she had recently fallen behind on lately. With everything coming up with the noctus pokemon and all these new trainers, she did not seem to have enough hours in the day anymore. In fact, she was falling severely behind on the amount of tea she was drinking in a day and not to mention the amount of time she was spending with all of her pokemon. The ones that were actually hers and the ones which were lined up, ready to go to the next trainer who came waltzing in.
As Lavender worked on keeping the place tidy and Daffodil did her best to help the Professor, Lilac made sure Rose was in his pokeball before heading toward the door. That pokemon was such a pain the majority of the time, not that she did not like him. It was just such a hassle when the thing suddenly felt the need to maul new trainers and wreck the house, making it much more difficult to get anything done, especially since everyone would become focused on catching the dragon pokemon and then doing their best to re-clean the laboratory before the next person appeared. She looked back over her shoulder to make sure the Professor was still doing her work before disappearing into the main building of the house, looking toward the human who had just entered.
She had tucked back her hair before entering the laboratory, and Lilac wondered if the door had been left open by the last trainer, as she could not recall having heard it even open. She tilted her head toward the girl before greeting her. { Hello, the Professor is a little busy at the moment, so I will help you for now, } She said, trying to decide if this person had come straight through the door and she had just missed the opening of the door, but shook it off. Even if this person had just walked in, it was not much of a problem, since she had no pokemon anyway. And obviously posed no threat. Lilac did her best to appear pleasant and happy, but she was often too frustrated, which resulted in a bit of a grumpy edge to her telepathic voice.

The telepathic words, frustration evenly lining ever short syllable, caught Ashleigh off guard and she instinctively jumped, clearly startled and off to a bad start already. Running her hands up her arms nervously, Asheligh averted her honey brown eyes from the Gardevoir's piercing red ones. "Oh, I am very sorry, my name's Ashleigh and I came to Nexivus after my mother passed away back home..." Ashleigh began in a fluster, rambling in her uneasiness. "I- I heard free Pokemon were available here since the noctus Pokemon became so prominent, so I was hoping I could obtain my own, but I can come back later, I'm sorry for barging in at a bad time..." Ashleigh trailed off uncertainly, now ducking and turning away slightly, trying to ignore the blatant beauty of a Pokemon floating before her, its soft green hair complicating her task as it reflected the fluorescent lights from above.
Although she didn't particularly care for a Gardevoir on her team, Ashleigh's favourite type was Pyschic and found the thrill of telepathy insatiable. She'd been exposed to it before when she helped with the local Pokemon breeders, but she never got the chance to get close to a Psychic Pokemon, and oh, how she longed for a relationship of that sort. For the time being though, a Pyschic Pokemon would have to wait: her first Pokemon needed to be her best friend and a reflection and symbol of who she, and they as a team, were. A Persian was the only Pokemon for the job.
The rejuvenating thought of finally owning her own Pokemon spiked a little more courage in the young girl and instead of darting out the door as she first felt she had to do, she respectfully, albeit awkwardly, waited for the Gardevoir's responce, taking shy side glances at the marvelous Pokemon every few seconds.

She did not look directly at her, and for some reason, Lilac found this a little amusing. Generally, trainers were not frightened by her, paying her little attention and demanding Professor Hawthorne to come and speak with them instead. However, this girl immediately began speaking to her, listening to what she said and watching her with interest. Her name was Ashleigh, her mother having passed away. Not that Lilac had asked any of this, but the human was... nervous? That's what she picked up on anyway.
{ Come this way, please } Was her only response, now picking up that this girl was not a real intruder or any sort of threat to them or the Professor's work. Nodding, she moved gracefully to the table in the main room, lifting a catalog off the table and handing it to the girl. { Any of them interest you? } She questioned, not paying any mind to the offer for the girl to leave and come back later. The girl avoided looking directly at her and instead only slightly glanced at her every now and again. She did not mind dealing with new trainers, so long as they were well mannered. This girl was just eager, by the looks of it. Perhaps easily spooked, or something of that sort. In which case, she figured the girl should pick a strong pokemon for herself.
She always found it odd when a shy trainer picked an equally shy pokemon. It was never much good for them, as neither trainer nor pokemon would ever get out and try to meet others. At least if they had bold pokemon, that pokemon would be more likely to get them more involved. However, she could never be certain that was exactly how this girl always was. In fact, it could just be a temporary thing, worried about getting a pokemon or just dealing with Lilac rather than the Professor.

Ashleigh was completely surprised at the Gardevoir's response, having expected the Pokemon to take up her offer. It looked like this Pokemon was similar to a lab assistant - did she perhaps belong to Professor Hawthorne? The thought was exhilarating and Ashleigh's eyes began to sparkle, her fears shrinking away. This was incredible! Even if she was too busy to meet the Professor, which would be a shame no matter what, she at least got helped by a Pokemon of her favourite type! And a stunning one at that!, Ashleigh thought with glee, walking a safe distance behind the awe-inspiring Psychic type.
The Gardevoir handed her a catalogue and Asheligh took it with slightly surprised eyes, not having pictured the distribution happening quite this way. She looked down at the catalogue, turning the first page and scanning it, impressed by the wide variety of Pokemon available. There was one, however, that stood out amongst all the rest.
Almost as if she had just the correct amount of luck to be at the right place at the right time, Ashleigh's eyes saw that Meowths were currently available. Instantly, Ashleigh felt her heart beat slightly faster, her face flushing under her foundation, her tongue darting out to wet her lips. It was just too perfect!
"Yes, yes there is... Ma'am," Ashleigh responded breathlessly and with a little embarrassment - she hadn't caught the Pokemon's name yet and didn't know how to properly refer to a Pokemon in a position like this. Perhaps it was just best to avoid having to refer to her at all. "T-the Meowth, please, if that's okay..." Ashleigh finished, still looking down at the laboratory floor tile, nearly shaking in anticipation and excitement. A Meowth! I'm getting my own Meowth!

The both of them seemed curious with one another, the human more so with Lilac than Lilac with her, but it was interesting none-the-less. She seemed a little less shy by this point, something that was pleasing for Lilac, as shy humans were her least favorite, next to the rude ones. She moved carefully and watched her as she picked the pokemon that interested her the most, a Meowth was what she wanted. She seemed amazed that they had them and Lilac could not help but smile. { Of course } She said, her voice now much more gentle as she floated down the hall and to a back room, quickly returning with three pokeballs floating around her body.
Allowing them to drop and three Meowths to land on the floor, she looked at the first one, hoping that Ashleigh would follow her gaze as she pointed toward it. { This first male is a playful fellow, wanting to make new friends at all possible times. He is easily amused, but can remain focused if he needs to } She said as the male rolled around on his back, batting his paws in the air and smiling to himself before rolling over to look at the human. Now batting a paw at her, he smiled, meowing in hopes that she would take up his offer for a game. { Now this female is a bit more fiesty. She is determined and will one day be a powerful Persian. She enjoys battles, but is not cruel in anyway. She can be a sore loser } Lilac continued as she pointed to the second pokemon. { This third fellow is a bit more timid. He may not be the best battle pokemon you will ever come across, but he does have a lot of heart. He always gives his all and is very loyal } She said, the last male taking a step away from the others as he curiously eyed the girl.
As Lilac finished, Professor Hawthorne made her way into the room. "Ah, hello! I see Lilac has been taking care of you for me? She is such a darling," The Professor beamed happily, her smile wide as she watched the girl and the Meowths. "Do any of them suite you?" She tilted her head and looked between all of them before looking back at the girl. "Oh! And I am Professor Hawthorne, by the way! Sorry," She smiled again, looking over the girl before looking toward Lilac, smiling again at her pokemon She was such a wonderful assistant. She hoped she had not come off as rude, as that was one thing she could not stand about people. She had just been so swamped. Not to mention, if Lilac had come to find her, she would have hurried in...

{Of course.}
The Gardevoir's telepathic voice had lost its disgruntled tone and Ashleigh looked happily up at the tall Pokemon, making eye contact for a few seconds. "Thank you," Ashleigh said, watching in mute amazement as the Gardevoir masterfully fetched and released three Pokeballs, the room now holding three presently unseen Meowths.
As difficult as it was to tear her eyes from the adorable and marvelous Pokemon before her, Ashleigh dragged her eyes away from their feline forms and looked up at the Gardevoir's face when the Psychic Pokemon outstretched her arm. She explained the nature of each three Pokemon and Ashleigh hung on ever word that reached her brain, already knowing which one was the best match for her even though she still felt like she needed to deliberate with herself; the first male Meowth seemed like such a promising friend, but she needed the determination and power that the female harboured.
For a trainer in Nexivus vulnerable to its new threat at all times, there hardly seemed like there was any way someone would choose any Meowth other than the female. From what it appeared, the noctus Pokemon were quite overpowered and very difficult to beat. This journey truly could be one of life or murderous death.
"I'll -"
I'll take the female, she was about to say when a very human voice interrupted the young transwoman who sneakily adjusted her padded bra as she shifted her arms as she moved into a new direction, this time facing and focused on the Gardevoir's right where a beautiful blonde woman was talking, looking very comfortable next to the Psychic Pokemon.
If the lab coat and glasses didn't already make it painfully clear, the woman introduced herself formally as Professor Hawthorne as an afterthought to her assistance. Since Professor Hawthorne was a human and spoke through the help of sound waves, Ashleigh instinctively reached out in a head shake, saying, "Hi Professor Hawthorne. My name is Ashleigh Lead," following the common human custom upon meeting someone new. Not that Professor Hawthorne was just some acquaintance to pass by - no! Ashleigh was really going to be able to shake Professor Hawthorne's hand!
Maintaining a slightly control expression, Ashleigh smiled wildly and resumed to the Pokemon once more, suppressing her inwardly squealing fangirl inside. "Oh, Lilac's just lovely," Ashleigh commented cheerfully, even if Lilac wasn't really all that lilac. "And the female suits me most, Professor," Ashleigh said, looking over at Lilac as well before bending down and danging her hand in front of the female Meowth, wary of startling her hopeful Pokemon-to-be.

Again lifting the pokeballs with her abilities, she returned the two males and carried them back to their rightful place until the next possible trainer appeared for them. She was pleased that she did not have to watch the new trainer anymore, although she would admit it was always a better task than cleaning or anything of that sort. Returning shortly with a clipboard, pen and paper, she handed them to the Professor before moving to the side of the room and watching the rest of the converstaion. "Perfect!" Professor Hawthorne beamed at the girls choice, handing her the pokeball after Lilac took the males away. She is a good choice, perfect for a starter pokemon under the current conditions, in my opinion. She is a lovely pokemon, just wants to win all the time, you know? She giggled, looking at the pokemon as it approached the new trainer. Shaking the girls hand before handing her the clipboard with papers, Professor Hawthorne looked back at Lilac who nodded and disappeared once more. "Please fill that out, Darling," She smiled, "Gotta keep records, you see." It was nothing too detailed or annoying, just good to have on file and required by the Ranger Union to have. She smiled and turned to see Lilac once more as the pokemon returned with a bag of items. Waiting for Ashleigh to pass her back the clipboard, she would then give her the items. "Just a starter pack," She smiled warmly, her voice still overly friendly and happy. "And Lilac is absolutely wonderful. A bit grumpy at times, but she gets annoyed with some trainers and not any real jobs anymore, you see," She looked fondly at her partner. How she loved that pokemon! One of the few things she liked as much (if not more) than her tea. "So I assume you are good to go then?" She asked, tilting her head to the side. "I wish you the best of luck in your journey and if you ever need anything, we will be here, dear," The Professor continued to smile, now backing up and allowing Lilac to take the papers to put on file and what not. "Take good care of her and yourself!" She said happily, watching the girl and cat-like pokemon with pleasure. Congratulations! You have received a MEOWTH!

"My thoughts exactly," Ashleigh concurred, holding her official first Pokemon's Pokeball with silent pride, the Meowth seated by her side. Lilac, who had previously sneaked out of view, came back into the room again, handing a clipboard and pen to the Professor. The older woman handed the clipboard and pen to Ashleigh who accepted it with a smile, nodding in understanding at Professor Hawthorne. Ashleigh hurriedly filled out the short paperwork, her elegant scrawl more slanted and the loops smaller than usual in her eager rush.
"Of course," the young trainer said as she handed the clipboard with the finished information and the borrowed pen back to the unusually cheerful Professor. Lilac had disappeared and returned again, this time holding a bag of items that the Professor swapped with Ashleigh's clipboard and borrowed pen.
The bag of items was the Nexivus starter pack. Ashleigh had read about it being free with the Pokemon, but had forgotten about it completely in the excitement of getting her first Pokemon. The bag contained five Pokeballs, three Potions, two Lava Cookies, a Nexivus region map, a TM/HM case, and a berry pouch. Deciding it'd be rude to properly store all of her new items away in front of the kind Professor, Ashleigh stuffed the whole bag of items into the largest compartment of her messenger bag, leaving it to sort later.
"Thank you so very much for everything," Ashleigh said, honestly grateful for everything the Professor and the Ranger Union were doing. "And I understand, Lilac - I've had to work in serving the public before, too," she commented, remembering how utterly impossible some people were to the breeders she helped. Some people just couldn't be pleased and seemed as if they made it their mission to be as difficult to work with as possible. Still though, it had its rewards.
"Yes, I think I'm set to go..." Ashleigh said, bending down to pick up her new Meowth. "Thank you again for everything, and if I ever need you, I'll be sure to stop by," Ashleigh said, nodding to Professor Hawthorne and Lilac. Her left hand on the back of her Meowth who was now peeking over her shoulder with wide eyes, Ashleigh turned respectfully away and exited the laboratory, eager to begin her new life but unsure where to start. Her new Meowth could sure use a companion though!
