RYAKU HAKURAI Blue eyes darted about nervously as he neared the laboratory. He wasn't as thirsty, hungry, or tired as he had been a few days ago; some nice old folks had taken him in, and he, of course, accepted without a word. They had even allowed him use of their antique-looking shower this morning, and now he was actually clean, with all the grime and grunge of the last few months probably in the sewers or a part of a Muk's slime. His dusky blue hair (he had made sure to pack the tiny bit of hair dye that kept it blue) was wet and strands of it were hanging around his jawline with a dead look. His bangs were hanging in his face, and he occasionally had to brush it away so that it wouldn't weaken his vision.
He was finally here, after all, and he was supposed to be able to see the first 'friend' he'd have gotten since he was a toddler, right? He brushed his wet hair out of his face again, wondering if he should cut it at some point. After about another dozen yards of walking, the door to the lab that he knew had to be Professor Hawthorne's was close enough to open, and after some mental preparations, he did so.
The place was a marvel, to say the least. Scientists running about, some with clipboards, some with scattered papers, and one with a pen behind his ear. Some stared at him, but after getting a long, hard stare in return, they went on with their business. He resisted the urge to grunt, and instead pulled his backpack, which contained all he had needed over the past several months of travel (meaning that it contained mainly food and water, and was currently very empty) tighter over his shoulders. It had become an instinctive thing when he was traveling. The last thing he had needed back then was for someone to steal his food and water, and in the outskirts of cities (where the buses refused to take him), there was always someone around who wished to do just that.
Lost in his thoughts, he barely noticed the door that led to the Professor's office, and ended up almost smashing into it. This gave him a few more stares, and those who stared got many colder ones back. With a few more, slightly hurried, mental preparations, he opened the door, and stepped in.
Steeling his eyes and stoning his expression, he looked straight at the Professor. "I would like to receive a Pokemon today." He stated, masking his inner nervousness/excitement with ease. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a few Pokemon about, and hoped that this signaled that his approval was certain.
But he could only hope.
ooc: If I may, can I reserve an Electrike? If not, he'll make his choice in-character.

He had blue hair, which was currently wet and made her wonder if it was raining outside. She tilted her head and looked him over, but did not really make any mental notes of anything else. Standing quickly with a smile, she reached her hand out (after wiping anything that might have collected on her lab coat off) and hoped to shake his. "Well, you are one to get straight to the point," She giggled, "I am Professor Hawthorne, as I'm sure you know by now. Would you like some tea?" She smiled looking over as Daffodil excitedly ran to grab the warm tea pot and some cups. Oh, how that Raichu loved tea.
Turning quickly, the Professor grabbed up a catalog before again turning on her heels and handing it to the blue haired fellow. "All of our available pokemon are listed in there. Let me know if any of them perk your interest," She continued to smile, her voice happy and kind. How she loved giving new trainers pokemon, at least the ones who were not jerks or anything of that sort. She could not stand those trainers, but then again, it was required for /everyone/ to have a pokemon, so there was not a whole lot she could do about it anymore.
The Raichu returned quickly and set the tea pot and cups down before pouring three cups, one for herself, one for the professor, and one for this boy. She then handed them out and sat down to drink hers. "Thank you, Daffodil," Hawthorne smiled, sipping her tea as she waited to here which pokemon this boy wanted to look at. But she was not in too much of a rush. She knew it was a hard decision for many, as it meant that pokemon would be their original partner. Sure, many trainers ended up with more later on and traded them around, but for the first part of the journey, at least the first city and the forest, this pokemon would be their best friend. And for some, this pokemon would be their best friend past that. So it was often her duty to try and make sure they received the perfect match.

RYAKU HAKURAI Realizing that his shoulders had stiffened, clearly revealing his nervousness, he relaxed them and took the hand offered by the Professor, hoping that there wasn't too much grime in it that wouldn't be rubbed off with any brand of soap. His dusky blue eyes widened just a bit when she giggled, and he thought that she seemed a bit laid back with her job. Shouldn't she be uptight, or focused, or someone who doesn't giggle like a toddling child? But perhaps this was just what he thought of her. People tended to destroy other people's expectations of them, and clearly he was an example.
Professor Hawthorne. Something in his subconscious knew her name, but the rest of his mind was completely unaware, and thus instinctively replied with a quick "Nice to meet you." She offered him tea, and he relaxed just a bit more at her lax attitude. He accepted this by nodding his head. "Do you have any peppermint teas?" He didn't usually have tea; for the past few months, he'd just been having straight water. But he liked the refreshing taste of mint, so why wouldn't he like it when it was placed in hot water? Besides, he had very few preferences that he knew, and so this was a rare miracle.
A Raichu, and a very happy one at that, was making the tea. He saw no oddities in this; Pokemon tended to help people do tasks. But something about it seemed just so...friendly. He had seen some Pokemon who did tasks with a grudge in mind, some completely neutral about it, but few who enjoyed the work. Ah, but he wasn't focusing on the task at hand, and this was something he constantly needed to do.
The Professor grabbed a catalog that must have held the starter list, and handed it to him, which he opened quickly. He still kept his indigo eyes locked on the Professor as she spoke. Politeness. One of the few things that Rai had remembered from his parents' lessons. She told him to let him know if any would 'perk his interest', and he focused on the catalog.
The first thing he noticed was the huge amount of Pokemon that were on the sheet. A tiny bit of panic crept into his mind, creating a thought. How am I supposed to choose between all these Pokemon?! He quickly ignored it and kept looking. A few caught his eye; a Pichu, which gave him fond memories of that particular era in his journey. A Houndour, which had given him memories of that one day with the thugs when they had robbed a man and the dark- and fire-type had tried feebly to attack, then ran. He resisted the urge to shudder; he hated thinking about his days with the thugs.
As this shudder was prevented, his eyes locked on a particular Pokemon. Electrike, it was called. An electric-type, obviously, and one that definitely 'perked his interest'. He looked up from the catalog to see a few cups of tea laid out for him, the Professor, and what appeared to be the Raichu. He looked at the electric rodent and nodded his thanks, almost in sync with the Professor's verbal thanks.
He locked eyes with the Professor, took a silent, yet deep, inhale through his nose, and stiffened up a bit again. "May I see the..." He paused, mentally confirming his choice. "...Electrikes that you have?"
There. That wasn't so hard, was it? Now, for the patience, and then more decisions. But the one that would follow suit would be the one that would change his life. Hopefully, for the better.
ooc: Someone tell me if I didn't reserve the Pokemon correctly. I want to know.

Her happy eyes and bright smile were welcoming and that was one reason she really loved her job. She felt as if she was welcoming and relaxing, that trainers did not feel so threatened by her or like she might chew their heads off. She almost laughed at the idea, but shook it off as he responded before asking for peppermint tea, something that Daffodil had been happy and quick to take care of before having given them the tea.
She watched him curiously as he went through the catalog, finally setting his eyes on one pokemon in particular. Electrike. Oh, how cute those were. The little electric dogs, so full of energy. Quick, too. But most electric pokemon were, which made sense, since electricity is fast. "Of course! I'll be right back," She beamed, turning quickly and leaving the room momentarily before returning with three pokeballs. Releasing all three simultaneously, she looked up at the boy then back at the dogs. They were one of the rotating pokemon, which often went quicker, but so far, hardly any trainers had been in since the rotation, which was a good thing for others. "This first male," She said, pointing to the first electric, now sniffing curiously at the boy, "has a strong sense of what is right and what is wrong. He is not afraid of doing what he thinks is good and often stands out, not falling into the group with the others. He is not easily scared and hates to see any sort of bullying, often ending up in bad situations." She nodded.
Moving her attention to the second pokemon, she smiled again. "Now this one, is a female. She is quite independent and stubborn. She loves to battle and explore, but you will not be able to get her to listen to you through brute force. She is wary of anyone who does not show her friendship and kindness, so you would have to build up her trust. But, she will eventually grow to be a strong pokemon." She looked at the pokemon as it watched the boy, obviously annoyed with the idea of having been in a pokeball in the first place. However, she was still quite interested in him and what he was like. She then moved her attention to the last pokemon, again pointing at it. "This female, is very loyal and rather laid-back. She will never leave her trainers side and will do everything in her power to protect the ones she cares for. On the other hand, she does not get too worked up over little things and does not seem to have much of a temper, unless pushed too far, with a 'don't let it bug you' attitude." She finished, wondering if any of these pokemon would fit his life style.

RYAKU HAKURAI A quiet slurping produced its sound waves as he sipped his tea, appreciating the cool and fresh flavor of the mint. He nodded his thanks once again to the Raichu, who's name apparently was Daffodil. He was lost in his tea for a bit, focusing on his own thoughts. Panicked ones. What if there are no Electrikes and I can never have a Pokemon? What if this entire journey was wasted? On the other side of the mind spectrum, calm ones. There's gonna be Electrikes. I'll choose one, and everything will be okay. Excited, or rather, childish ones. I bet that the Electrike I receive will be my best friend! But, perhaps the most prominent one: Arceus help me, this tea is good.
Wrapped up in his thoughts, he only just heard the cheerful 'be right back' out of the Professor, and only looked up again when he heard the telltale strange noise that signaled a Pokemon's release. His blue eyes scanned the three almost similar Electrikes in front of him, looking for personality traits directly from their stature and expression. The only thing that he could tell at the moment was that one in particular looked fairly pissed. Perhaps he wouldn't choose that one, but he instantly hated himself for thinking this, and bit his tongue in self-anger. All Pokemon weren't based on their appearance. They were based on what was inside, and-
He stopped these thoughts, for he was entering the realm of the incredibly cheesy. She pointed to one of the Electrikes, and described his personality. The Electrike in question curiously sniffed his white sneakers, and he half-wondered if his white shoes were going to turn yellow. After she finished, he looked down at the Electrike, smiling a bit. He's just like me... He thought, wondering if this was the Pokemon that would become his. But maybe I don't need another me wandering around.
He looked to the second Electrike; the one who had looked pissed before; and described her. Stubborn; against brute force; wary against heartlessness. His dusky blue eyes locked with the Lightning Pokemon's own darker ones, and he could actually feel the jolt from her gaze. Or maybe that was the other one accidentally touching him; after all, it was an electric-type. I don't know what to think about this one... He mentally pondered. She seems like she's parallel, yet opposite of me. Perhaps we'd be good together? I don't know...
His wandering thoughts were interrupted as Professor Hawthorne continued. His eyes slowly wandered to the third and final Electrike, ending up right on her as she finished. Loyal; laid-back; non-temperamental; protective. Something inside him didn't like this one. No...just, no. He confirmed in his mind. She doesn't seem like the one for me.
He looked over all three again. He imagined himself with the first one and the second, and it had seemed like he would never choose. He strummed his fingers against the cup of tea that he still realized that he was holding. Then, suddenly, it hit him square in the face. If I didn't take these Pokemon, how would they manage with others? The second one would be okay with the right person, but the first one...it's really just for me. Well, he had made his choice, and he gave quick glances to the others, just to make sure. He locked eyes on the one he was choosing, and he felt a small bolt of electricity between himself and this one too.
He turned his head back towards the Professor, and finished his tea, which he had been subconsciously sipping throughout his decision process. "I've made my decision." He finally confirmed. Another quick glance at the Electrike that was at his feet, and then back to Hawthorne. "This one." Rai's hand found itself pointing to the Electrike at his feet, but there was really no reason to.
His eyes steeled as he stared at the Professor. He must have looked so shifty, what with his eyes going back and forth at the Pokemon and at the Professor. He must have added to this effect as he stared back at the Electrike, locking eyes with him, too. With two sets of steeled eyes staring at each other, the result was that he could almost feel the heavy electricity in the air.
His pale arms reached for the canid electric-type, and he picked it up, causing a slight jolt of static electricity. He held it tight, and it seemed like an instant understanding had suddenly sprouted. Both human and Pokemon looked back at the Professor with what seemed to be the same expression.
Yes, this one really was perfect for him.

Quickly returning the other two, it was only a moment before her Gardevoir was at her side trading her a clipboard for the pokeballs. She nodded gracefully to the boy before disappearing, going to return the other two pokemon to their rightful places until someone came to take them. The Professor then passed the pokeball to the boy as well as the clipboard. "Alright then, good choice. Can I just get you to fill this out?" She smiled gently, grabbing a pen to give him as well. It was mostly just to keep track of trainers and which pokemon they had chosen, something the ranger union required. As she gave him the clipboard, she then scurried back behind her desk, filling a plastic bag with items. Again moving toward the blue haired man, she now handed out this bag in exchange for the clipboard. "Some items to get you started, you know. Pokeballs and such," She smiled and waited. Her warm smile and expression never dropped and it was not long before she would be getting back to her other duties as the Professor of this area. "Now remember, take good care of him," She had said over her shoulder, giving one last look to the pokemon and new trainer. "And good luck on your journey," Her parting words. She always loved to stay and chit-chat, but is was usually better to just send the trainers on their way. Not like they wanted to stand around and talk anyway, plus she always had so much work to tend to. Congratulations! You received an ELECTRIKE

RYAKU HAKURAI His, and the green canid creature in his arms, stony stare turned to surprise, and he was almost sure that his new friend blinked in bemusement at the same time. Really? He questioned mentally. That's it? His confusion turned to excitement as the form was presented. Clearly, his new Pokemon felt this way as well, for he clambered up onto his shoulder and allowed him to grab it. He smiled, using a true picture of happiness that he rarely used nowadays. With a few strokes of the pen, his messy, non-cursive (he never learned it) signature was where it was necessary, written in blueish-black ink. He gave both form and pen back to the Professor, and looked over at his new Electrike, who was also smiling like there was no tomorrow.
He decided on taking off his pack, something he hadn't done since...well, yesterday, when he took a shower. But rarely before then, since his pack was his lifeline. He opened up the biggest compartment; which actually held mostly clothes; and gently placed the Electrike inside of it. "You should be comfortable there." He said, smoothness in his tone. "But I'll leave it slightly open so that you can get some air. Okay?" The Electrike looked straight into his eyes, shuffled about in the fairly clean clothes in his bag that he hoped didn't smell too bad and shook his head, dark eyes shining. He hopped back up onto his previous spot on his shoulder, and Rai couldn't help but snicker a little as he zipped his pack shut and put it back on. He's definitely just like me.
He looked back up to the Professor as she handed him a plastic bag full of items that created a bulge at the bottom. He opened a different compartment in the side, and quickly slipped the bag in, closing the zipper. The Professor, still smiling, reminded him to take good care of his new friend. He nodded, but this time, towards his new Pokemon. She wished him good luck, and he replied with another short "Thanks" and bolted for the door.
As he ran towards the outside, a thought occurred to him. What am I gonna name you? His dark blue eyes drifted towards his Pokemon. "Toku?" The unlabeled friend of his looked displeased. "Shika?" Another displeased look, along with a short 'Trike!' from his partner. He paused, now about thirty yards away from the lab. Finally, he knew the name he was going to go with.
"Kiiren!" He exclaimed towards his Pokemon, and perhaps sensing his enthusiasm about this name, his newly named Pokemon gave a pleased shout, and clung to his shoulder and he continued his sprint, head turned straight for his next stop; Featherwing City.
